Year of the Horse: Horse Zodiac Years, Dates, Traits and Compatibility
Every Year of the Horse from 1924 to 2035 with exact Chinese New Year start and end dates, plus Horse traits, best matches, clashes and Tai Sui in 2026 and 2027.
The Year of the Horse comes round once every twelve years in the Chinese zodiac, and it is one of the most familiar signs in the cycle. The Horse (马) is sign number 7 of the twelve animals. People born in a Horse year are traditionally described as free-spirited, lively and independent. The horse stands for speed and perseverance, and the idiom 马到成功 ("success upon the horse's arrival") is a popular good-luck wish. This guide gives the exact start and end dates, worked birthday examples, Horse traits, compatibility notes and Tai Sui information for 2026 and 2027.
Horse matches the branch Wu (午), the hours of 11 am–1 pm, the height of the day.
Year of the Horse: exact dates
A Horse year begins on Chinese New Year, not on January 1. The Chinese calendar is lunisolar, so the start date moves each year. Encyclopaedia Britannica explains that the festival begins with the new moon falling between January 21 and February 20, and that the zodiac year begins with it. A Horse year can therefore start in late January or in mid-February.
| Zodiac year | Starts | Ends |
|---|---|---|
| 1930 | Jan 30, 1930 | Feb 16, 1931 |
| 1942 | Feb 15, 1942 | Feb 4, 1943 |
| 1954 | Feb 3, 1954 | Jan 23, 1955 |
| 1966 | Jan 21, 1966 | Feb 8, 1967 |
| 1978 | Feb 7, 1978 | Jan 27, 1979 |
| 1990 | Jan 27, 1990 | Feb 14, 1991 |
| 2002 | Feb 12, 2002 | Jan 31, 2003 |
| 2014 | Jan 31, 2014 | Feb 18, 2015 |
| 2026 | Feb 17, 2026 | Feb 5, 2027 |
These dates come from the Hong Kong Observatory. You can compare them with its Gregorian-Lunar calendar conversion table or the text version of the table.
Why the lunar calendar matters
The lunar months follow the moon, so each one lasts 29 or 30 days, and twelve of them make up a year. Britannica's entry on the Chinese calendar describes how intercalary months are added from time to time to keep the lunar year in step with the seasons. This is why the zodiac year does not line up with the Gregorian January 1 boundary.
Worked examples: which sign do you get?
The quickest way to see the rule in action is to test a few birthdays against the start dates. The table below uses only the boundary dates listed above.
| Birthday | Zodiac sign | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Jan 26, 1990 | Snake | The 1990 Horse year had not started yet (it starts Jan 27) |
| Jan 27, 1990 | Horse | First day of the 1990 Horse year |
| Jan 30, 2014 | Snake | Day before the 2014 Horse year starts (Jan 31) |
| Jan 31, 2014 | Horse | First day of the 2014 Horse year |
| Feb 16, 2026 | Snake | Day before the 2026 Horse year starts (Feb 17) |
| Feb 17, 2026 | Horse | First day of the 2026 Year of the Horse |
A third example: someone born on February 5, 2027 still falls within the 2026 Year of the Horse, because that is the final date listed for it. Anyone born close to the turn of the year should check the exact date before settling on a sign.
Horse personality in Chinese tradition
Traditional descriptions of the Horse focus on being free-spirited, lively and independent. These are cultural associations, not scientific findings, and they are shared by everyone born in the same zodiac year. A full Four Pillars (Bazi) chart uses much more than the year animal. The Victoria and Albert Museum notes that personality-by-sign is a fairly recent development, and that old Chinese texts do not discuss it in this way.
Horse compatibility
In the tradition, compatibility describes patterns between signs rather than scores. The main relationships for the Horse are below.
Harmonies and allies
- Six Harmonies (secret friend): Goat
- Three Harmonies (allies): Tiger and Dog
Clash
- Clash (opposite sign): Rat
You can see every pairing for the Horse, including harm, break and punishment tags, on the compatibility tool.
Tai Sui in the Year of the Horse 2026
Tai Sui is a traditional figure linked to each year. The Kew Ong Yah Temple explains that sixty Tai Sui gods take turns by year within the sixty-year Jiazi cycle, and that each person has a birth-year natal god. For background, the Tai Sui article on Wikipedia gives an overview of the tradition.
- 2026 (Year of the Horse): Zhi Tai Sui (own year), Punishment (xing)
- 2027 (Goat year): no traditional Tai Sui relationship
These follow the folk year-sign rule set used by our Tai Sui checker. Meeting Tai Sui is a traditional reminder to be steady and considerate, not a forecast.
Does the zodiac year change birth patterns?
Some people wonder whether a sign affects how many children are born in a given year. Research on this is mixed. A study by Ma Yan in Population Research examined mainland China from 1949 to 2008 and found no zodiac birth preference at the national level. Any fluctuations, it suggested, came from population momentum. The zodiac is best read as a cultural tradition rather than a measurable effect.
How to check your sign
To confirm your sign, find your birth date in the Chinese New Year calendar, not the Gregorian one. If your birthday falls in January or February, compare it with the start date for that year. The zodiac finder does this check for you, so you can be sure before reading further.

Frequently asked questions
When does the Year of the Horse start?
The Horse year starts on Chinese New Year, which falls between late January and mid-February. The most recent example is 2026, when the Horse year began on February 17 and ran until February 5, 2027. Dates for other Horse years, from 1930 to 2026, are listed in the table above, based on Hong Kong Observatory conversion data.
Why is my birthday in January or February not matching my zodiac sign?
The zodiac year begins at Chinese New Year, not January 1. If you were born before the Chinese New Year date for that year, your sign belongs to the previous year. For example, someone born on February 16, 2026 is a Snake, while someone born on February 17, 2026 is a Horse.
What are the main traits of a Horse in the Year of the Horse?
Traditional descriptions say people born in a Horse year are free-spirited, lively and independent. These are cultural associations, not scientific findings. They are shared by everyone born in the same zodiac year, and a full Four Pillars chart uses much more than the year animal.
Which signs are compatible with the Horse?
In the tradition, the Horse forms a Six Harmonies pairing with the Goat and Three Harmonies with the Tiger and Dog. The Rat is the opposite sign and is considered a clash. Compatibility describes patterns rather than scores, and the compatibility tool lists every pairing with its tags.
Is 2026 a Tai Sui year for the Horse?
Yes. The 2026 Year of the Horse is a Horse year, and in our folk year-sign rules it is listed as the Horse's own Zhi Tai Sui year, with a Punishment (xing) relationship. Tai Sui is traditionally seen as a reminder to be steady and considerate, not as a forecast.
Do zodiac years affect how many babies are born?
Research has not shown a consistent effect at the national level. A study of mainland China from 1949 to 2008 found no zodiac birth preference, and any changes were attributed to population momentum. Some local studies have reported timing effects. Overall, the zodiac is best understood as cultural tradition.
