2027 Year of the Goat: Dates, Birth Years and What the Goat Represents
The 2027 Chinese zodiac year is the Year of the Goat, from February 6, 2027 to January 25, 2028. Dates, Goat birth years, traits and Tai Sui signs.
The 2027 Chinese zodiac year is the Year of the Goat (羊年), a Ding Wei (丁未) year in the sixty-year cycle. Using the Hong Kong Observatory boundary dates, it begins on February 6, 2027 and ends on January 25, 2028, and the Monkey year starts the next day. Because the zodiac year follows Chinese New Year rather than the Gregorian calendar, the exact start date matters more than the calendar year number.
Why the Year of the Goat does not start on January 1
Chinese zodiac years change at Chinese New Year, not on January 1. The Hong Kong Observatory's calendar conversion table is a useful reference for matching Gregorian and lunar dates. Encyclopaedia Britannica describes the Chinese calendar as lunisolar, built from 12 months of 29 or 30 days, with intercalary months added from time to time to keep it aligned with the seasons. The festival itself is a 15-day celebration that begins with the new moon falling between January 21 and February 20.
Anyone born before February 6, 2027 belongs to the Horse year, which began at Chinese New Year 2026. If you are planning around a due date or a family celebration, use the exact boundary dates rather than the calendar year. The 2027 page lists the full calendar.
Goat birth years and their boundaries
Each Goat year runs from one Chinese New Year to the next. The table below uses the Hong Kong Observatory boundary dates for recent Goat years.
| Goat year | Starts | Ends |
|---|---|---|
| 1931 | February 17, 1931 | February 5, 1932 |
| 1943 | February 5, 1943 | January 24, 1944 |
| 1955 | January 24, 1955 | February 11, 1956 |
| 1967 | February 9, 1967 | January 29, 1968 |
| 1979 | January 28, 1979 | February 15, 1980 |
| 1991 | February 15, 1991 | February 3, 1992 |
| 2003 | February 1, 2003 | January 21, 2004 |
| 2015 | February 19, 2015 | February 7, 2016 |
| 2027 | February 6, 2027 | January 25, 2028 |
If you were born in January or early February of one of those years, check your birthday. You may be a Horse or another sign rather than a Goat.
Worked examples: Year of the Goat boundary dates
The rule is simple: a person born on or after a Goat year's start date belongs to that Goat year, and a person born before it belongs to the previous sign. The examples below use only the boundary dates above.
| Birth date | Zodiac year | Why |
|---|---|---|
| February 5, 2027 | Horse | Falls before the 2027 Goat year starts |
| February 6, 2027 | Goat | First day of the Goat year |
| January 25, 2028 | Goat | Last day of the 2027 Goat year |
| January 31, 2003 | Horse | Falls before the 2003 Goat year starts |
| February 1, 2003 | Goat | First day of the 2003 Goat year |
These examples show why a birthday in early February needs checking. A date that feels like it should be one sign can fall into the year before.
What the Year of the Goat represents
In Chinese tradition the Goat, also translated Sheep or Ram, is linked with gentleness, creativity, kindness and a calm, artistic temperament. Goat years are often described as good for steady, cooperative work and for tending relationships. Smith College Museum of Art explains that the twelve zodiac animals are the twelve earthly branches, which are paired with ten heavenly stems to name days, months and years. The Victoria and Albert Museum notes that linking personality with each sign is a fairly recent development and does not appear in older Chinese texts.
These descriptions are cultural tradition, not science or prediction. They are one way people have talked about the Goat year, and they say nothing certain about any individual.
Tai Sui in 2027
Tai Sui is a folk belief about a deity associated with each year. A Singapore temple's guide explains that sixty Tai Sui gods take turns, one for each year of the sixty Jiazi cycle, and that a natal god is linked to each birth year. For general background, see the Tai Sui article on Wikipedia.
Under the folk year-sign rule set used on this site, four signs have a traditional Tai Sui relationship with the Goat year: Goat (own year), Ox (clash and punishment), Rat (harm) and Dog (break and punishment). Read more in What Is Tai Sui? or use the Tai Sui checker.
Does the zodiac affect births? What studies found
Some researchers have tested whether the zodiac shapes birth numbers, mostly around Dragon years. Yip, Lee and Cheung (2002) reported that births in Hong Kong rose 7.8% in 1988 and 4.2% in 2000 over the preceding year. They described this as a timing effect with little effect on cumulative fertility.
Goodkind (1993) found that notable Dragon-year increases did not occur in Taiwan before 1976. The 1976 rise came mostly through marriage timing, abortion and coital behavior. A National Bureau of Economic Research paper by Mocan and Yu found that births jump in Dragon years and that Dragon-born children were more likely to be college educated. That gap disappeared once parents' expectations were taken into account. Ma Yan (2010) found no zodiac birth preference at the national level in mainland China from 1949 to 2008, with fluctuations explained by population momentum.
These are findings about specific years and places. They do not show anything about an individual child.

Frequently asked questions
When does the Year of the Goat start and end?
According to Hong Kong Observatory boundary dates, the Goat year in 2027 begins on February 6, 2027 and ends on January 25, 2028. The Monkey year starts the next day. Because the zodiac year follows Chinese New Year, not January 1, people born in early February should check the exact date before assigning a sign.
Which years were Goat years?
Recent Goat years include 1931, 1943, 1955, 1967, 1979, 1991, 2003, 2015 and 2027. Each Goat year starts on its Chinese New Year date and ends the day before the next zodiac year begins. The table in this article lists the start and end dates for each one.
Am I a Horse if I was born in early February 2027?
Yes, if you were born before February 6, 2027. That date is when the Goat year begins, so anyone born earlier belongs to the Horse year that started at Chinese New Year 2026. Anyone born on or after February 6, 2027 is a Goat.
Does the Year of the Goat say anything scientific about personality?
No. Traits such as gentleness and creativity are cultural tradition, not science. The Victoria and Albert Museum notes that linking personality with each zodiac sign is a fairly recent development. Research on zodiac effects, such as studies of Dragon-year births, concerns population patterns and does not describe individuals.
What is the Tai Sui relationship for the Year of the Goat?
Under the folk year-sign rule set used on this site, Goat (own year), Ox (clash and punishment), Rat (harm) and Dog (break and punishment) are the four signs with a traditional Tai Sui relationship with the Goat year. This is a folk belief. You can check the details on the Tai Sui checker page.
Where can I check my sign for the Year of the Goat?
Compare your birth date with the boundary dates for the Goat years listed in this article, or enter it on the homepage. Dates close to a Chinese New Year need the most care, because the zodiac year changes on that date rather than on January 1.
